about

With their third release since summer 2021, trombone fueled doom/noise/jazz act Eaters of the Soil take a side step from their main approach that started with their two self-titled EPs and dig into their (even more) experimental side.

While the self-titled EP’s originated by having trombone, guitar and fretless bass improvise over a prerecorded foundation of drums, doom bass and synths the band decided to somewhat reverse its compositional process.

In preparation of their first live performance early 2022 the band did a technical run down and being all plugged in took the opportunity to record two 15 minute(-ish) improvisations.

The trombone, guitar, fretless bass and drum tracks from that session were taken into the studio to add synths, samples and doom bass. In doing so, the band challenged themselves to fuse its unmistakable doom sound with vibes and structures that were created out of the blue.

Resulting in two ‘compositions’ in which the band stretches the boundaries of its sound once again.

--

Eaters of the Soil is a doom metal act from Utrecht, the Netherlands. The band takes a non-traditional approach to the genre by merging it with noise, free jazz and improv. While the drums and doom bass lay the heavy foundation; guitar, trombone and fretless bass have a free role and improvise their parts, adding unexpected layers and moods.

Though vocals are absent, the band explores the dark and manipulative side of the human mind through the use of speech samples.

Eaters of the Soil was formed during the corona pandemic and lockdown in December 2020, releasing their self-titled debut EP in July 2021 and the second in January 2022, while growing into a live band playing its first gigs.

While being a new band the collective efforts of the band’s members stretch from underground metal (a.o. Devious, Next Waste Dimension, The Howl Ensemble) to noise improv collective Lärmschutz and collabs with artists like Dirk Serries, Mauro Pawlowski (dEUS, Evil Superstars) and Trevor Dunn (Fantômas, John Zorn’s Masada).
