about

'You Play the Red and the Black Comes Up' is a field recording experiment between Boulder, Colorado musician/sound artist Naviškie (Tm Novak) and St. Paul, Minnesota dark ambient deconstructionist The Creeping Man (Chris Campbell).

The collaboration called for each artist to send the other a series of field recordings. Most of the recordings consisted of mundane and everyday items: washer/dryer, fireplace, carwash, sparklers, a water bottle struck with a cord mallet, etc. These field recordings were then used/manipulated/assembled into larger, fully-fledged soundscapes.

There was little communication regarding a theme or overall structure for the project, other than to simply experiment and see what the results might bring.

"The end result is nothing short of mesmerizing and bizarre. Simple and unexceptional pieces of audio are transformed into haunting sonorities that range from calm yet dour to intense and slightly overwhelming. The collaboration somewhat neatly lines up along the midpoint with Campbell taking over from Novak, although it seems impossible to tell where one artist's influence ends and the other begins." - On the Fringes of Sound

The title is taken from a 1938 crime novel from British writer Eric Knight.
